DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK

1. A levee district police officer is sworn to and is responsible for the enforcement of all laws. An officer shall institute: felony or misdemeanor arrest concerning all state and federal laws.

2. An officer shall respond to any and all calls or reports of law violations at any hour of the day or night, and his work is performed outdoors under varied climatic conditions which may occasionally create physical hardships. A thorough knowledge of court procedures, court records and due process are essential for an officer to perform his duties. Officers conduct investigations and when required, prepare search warrants, affidavits, and collect and preserve evidence for the crime lab and the court.

3. An officer must be prepared at all times to assist in civil defense emergencies such as natural or manmade disasters. Assistance is given to officers of other law enforcement agencies and to other local, state, and federal agencies.

4. An officer must be skilled in the use and safe operations of vehicles, boats, trailers, mobile and hand-held radios, and other assigned equipment.

5. Public relations is an important aspect of the officer's duties. He must apply knowledge of laws and department procedures as well as personal judgment and tact in his day-to-day contact with the public to effectively perform his duties.

ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITY:

A levee district police officer shall conduct regular day and night patrols of his assigned area by appropriate means; boat, auto, airplane, atv, foot, etc. to prevent and detect violations of law. He will interpret state laws to individuals encountered on patrols, make necessary arrests of violators, make reports of his findings and appear in court proceedings when required as a witness in cases brought to trial.

SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS:

Members of the Levee District Police may be assigned to perform special investigations. These investigations may require an officer to perform covert criminal assignments under cover in plain clothes.

PERMIT ENFORCEMENT/INSPECTION:

Levee District Police are notified by the proper authorities of any activities which have been officially permitted within a district. Those activities occurring within a district are observed during routine patrols and notation of the observations are recorded in daily reports. All non- permitted activities are controlled on the scene. Levee District Police regulate commercial and private operations which includes any explosives detonation. They regulate and monitor all land and waterway use activities which includes any special events such as fireworks, boat races, or the making of motion pictures, etc.

ACCIDENT INVESTIGATIONS:

Levee District Police are responsible for the investigation and reporting of any accident to members of the public in defined areas.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE:

During periods of natural or man-made disasters, the Levee District Police may be assigned regular and reconnaissance patrol duties. They may also be assigned special duties, such as crowd control and traffic management, communication center operations, command post operations, emergency courier service, and search and rescue activities.
