Levee District Police check motorists, pedestrians, boaters, hunters, fishermen, and commercial operations in order to insure compliance with state and federal laws.

Officers respond to emergency police calls, on a regular basis and intervene independently, when necessary, to restore order, protect life and property and prevent crime.

Levee District Police are responsible for general law enforcement on the surrounding waterways. Normal marine law enforcement is accomplished by patrol vessels equipped for marine law enforcement activities, and vehicle patrol of adjacent marine areas that are accessible. Officers also provide marine patrol to insure compliance with all safety regulations.

The Levee District Police also perform search and rescue operations on a regular basis. Officers receive training in crash/fire/rescue activities and respond to emergency alerts for man-made and natural disasters.

An important function of the Levee District Police is the safeguarding of the waterways and protective systems from all criminal activities according to the Federal Rivers and Harbors Act. Sabotage during high water flooding could result in the loss of thousands of lives and damage millions of dollars worth of property.

Counter – Terrorism is an important responsibility of the Levee District Police.

This summary is not meant to be conclusive but merely a representative of the general functions of the Levee District Police. Job functions and duties encompass a great deal more and are assigned by police supervisors on a daily basis.
